As we all know about IBM computers. Now US Government has accredited IBM to build a massive supercomputer that will have 1.6 million processor cores and be 15 times faster than today's most powerful machine .
The computer is to be in charge of making sure that America’s nuclear arsenal is in a working state at all times.
It's called "Sequoia" super computer. The "Sequoia" supercomputer is scheduled for operation in 2012 and will be able to perform at 20 petaflops(measurement of computer speed: one quadrillion (10^15) floating point operations per second), IBM said. The fastest supercomputer today, IBM's Roadrunner at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, can manage 1.1 petaflops. The Nuclear Weapons contain highly corrosive and radioactive materials and "Sequoia" will allow scientists to perform simulations to help determine whether the weapons are stable and safe. The strategy behind this creation is to remove the possibility of human error.
Although in reality, “Sequoia,” as this new supercomputer is to be called, will not be in charge of firing the weapons, just maintenance. Lets see how the world community is going to react on it. |
